In April 2018, the hearts of millions of Fixer Upper fans were shattered when the final episode of the beloved HGTV show aired. After months of healing, hope was renewed when Chip and Joanna Gaines announced their return to television—this time with an entire network, courtesy of Discovery.
Now that they've had time to focus on family—including welcoming baby Crew into the mix—and run their Magnolia empire, they’re ready to grace our small screens again with Magnolia TV network, coming October 2020.
Here’s everything you need to know about it.
When did Chip and Joanna Gaines announce their Magnolia TV network?
Chip and Joanna Gaines announced their return to TV during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in November 2018.
"We signed a non-disclosure," Chip said as Joanna tried to stop him. But, amid all the excitement, he couldn't stop himself. Can you really blame him, though? The Roots were right there.
"[The NDA] said quote-on-quote 'You can tell your mother, but that's it,'" he continued staring directly into the camera. "So mom, I just wanted to make a quick announcement. We are coming back to television!"
An Instagram post by Magnolia confirmed his announcement, giving more information. "This isn't a done deal quite yet, but we are all really excited about what we've got in mind: our own cable network!” the post read. “We want to create a space on television unlike anything that exists today. A lifestyle channel aimed at inspiring and looking at the world in a new way."
When is Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia TV network premiering?
Chip and Jo’s Magnolia TV network will premiere in October 2020. Originally, Discovery announced that it would launch in summer 2020, but the Gaines discreetly shared the pushed-back date when their first show was revealed.
Magnolia TV network will also be available on the TV Everywhere app and there are plans for a subscription streaming service to debut in the future. Discovery reassured Fixer Upper fans that all these services will be inspired by Magnolia and “driven by the Gaines’ creative vision.”
Are there any previews of Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia TV network?
On July 12, Jo gave a sneak peek of her and Chip preparing to start production on a set. In their usual manner, both joke around with each other and the camera crew, prompting multiple takes.
"There’s so many stories just waiting to be told," Chip says. "Stories that bring us together, that encourage us to listen closer, and let us see one another in a whole new light," they say. "Stories that help us lean in and stand out, that connect us to our roots and to one another. Stories that make us wonder and think in way we never have before."
In her “Summer Update” blog post on the Magnolia website, Jo was honest about being nervous about the unknowns ahead and having to learn as she goes. But ultimately the stories told make that journey worth it, she said.
And the first story will center around husband-wife musical duo, Jimmyswim. Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano will star in a six-episode series, titled Home on the Road, in which they will share what it's like touring across North America with two young children.
What will happen to Discovery’s DIY network?
Chip and Jo exclusively confirmed to USA Today that it will take over Discovery's DIY Network, which currently features shows like Nicole Curtis's Rehab Addict. At the moment, DIY Network is seen in more than 52 million U.S. homes, but will be renamed for the Gaines takeover.
The mission is to take "big characters and big personalities that people love and want to spend time with," and make them stars. So, naturally, that's Chip and Jo. The couple will star in a new show on the network and other possible series as well. Keeping in line with their Magnolia empire, the new TV network will likely be "branded with some variation of their Magnolia banner."
Will Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia TV network impact their other businesses?
The Discovery TV network is an effort to continue expanding the Magnolia "ecosystem." Zaslav emphasized the Magnolia "ecosystem" the power couple created aligns with Discovery’s vision of inspiring people’s passions and will help expand revenue opportunities as they continue to grow. After all, it is an empire—so Discovery is smart to not let that go.
Who will head Chip and Joanna Gaines' Magnolia TV network?
In April, Discovery TV confirmed that HGTV’s President, Allison Page, was leaving her current role to run the new joint venture.
"We’ll have stories about family and community, food, garden, of course design, wellness, entrepreneurialism,” Page told USA Today. “There are so many facets, at least in television, that people have not seen from them.”
Since then, Page has announced other key hires, like Donna MacLetchie, Julie Morris, and John Marsicano. The three will lead the programming, research and strategy, and publicity teams, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"I am thrilled to officially welcome three key members of our senior team," she said in September. "Having worked with Donna for over a decade, she's proven to have a keen eye for identifying talent and developing formats, and her passion and energy knows no bounds. Julie is a gifted manager and brings a deep understanding of the audience."
She continued: "John's insight into the Magnolia brand and the wider entertainment landscape is simply remarkable, and we are so excited to have him joining the network team. I'm very much looking forward to all that's ahead for this team."
